Primary objective
Be responsible for the management of the Northern Territory (NT) Notifiable Disease Surveillance (NDS) database including coordinating
data entry, policy and system changes, teaching other support staff NDS data entry and quality control. Provide regular statistical reports
for key stakeholders.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide logistic support to the Surveillance Section in data analysis, outbreak control, policy and protocol development
2. Data entry coordination of all notifiable disease data to maintain the quality and timeliness of data in the NT Notifiable Diseases
System.
3. Interact daily with the On Call person to ensure all urgent notifications are dealt with to ensure timely public health responses in
accordance with guidelines.
4. Generate high level reports pertaining to disease surveillance in the NT.
5. Process data requests pertaining to disease surveillance in the NT.
6. Data entry of all NT Hepatitis C notifications, liaison with the Surveillance Officer, Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Unit around
Hepatitis C enhanced surveillance.
7. Undertake systematic routine quality assurance and coordinate in the development of quality improvement strategies of the
Notifiable Disease Database.
8. Train staff on the use of the NDS including data entry and quality control.
9. Provide admin support to the Surveillance Unit and to the Centre for Disease Control team as directed by the Medical Lead,
Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Response.
10. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to
ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Extensive experience and working knowledge of databases and experience with the use of computer-based systems.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of systems security, and the principles of data privacy and integrity.
3. Knowledge of and familiarity with Clinical systems such as Caresys, CWS or similar for data quality assurance.
4. Extensive knowledge of report generation techniques and methods of analysis and interpretation and demonstrated ability to produce
reports on request.
5. Proven ability to identify emerging issues and suggest solutions in a sensitive, yet effective manner.
6. Proven ability to train staff in the use of complex systems.
Desirable
1. Experience in a Health Service with a focus on Public Health and knowledge of medical terminology.
