Specialist nursing opportunity within Neurosurgery and Planned Surgery
Preferred working days Monday and Friday, with flexibility to negotiate
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Surgical Liaison Nurse to join the Neurosurgery and Planned Surgery team at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. In this specialised nursing role, you will coordinate and manage the care of Neurosurgery patients throughout their planned surgery journey, helping to ensure timely access to surgery and a smooth transition through the healthcare system. You will be primarily responsible for managing the Neurosurgery Planned Surgery waiting list in accordance with relevant policies and Department of Health requirements. Working closely with surgical teams and other key stakeholders, you will coordinate patient care, streamline the elective admission process and support initiatives aimed at reducing surgical wait times and length of stay. This role would suit an experienced acute surgical nurse with strong organisational and communication skills who enjoys coordinating care and working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
Classification: YU11 – $115,289.20 per annum, pro rata
Key Responsibilities
You will:
Coordinate and case manage Neurosurgery patients throughout their planned surgery journey
Manage the Neurosurgery Planned Surgery waiting list in accordance with relevant policies and procedures
Work closely with surgical teams and other stakeholders to support appropriate and timely patient management
Monitor planned surgery cancellations and coordinate appropriate patient follow-up
Monitor Category 1 patients to support treatment within the required 30-day timeframe
Manage Category 2 and Category 3 patients to support treatment within Department of Health designated timeframes
Support an efficient elective admission process and timely progression of patients to surgery
Contribute to initiatives that improve patient flow, reduce waiting times and support effective transitions of care
To be successful in this role, you will have:
A Bachelor of Nursing that meets the registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
At least three years of postgraduate acute surgical nursing experience
Strong clinical assessment, organisation and care coordination skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with patients, surgical teams and other stakeholders
The ability to manage competing priorities and coordinate patients within required clinical timeframes
A current National Criminal History Check, or willingness to obtain one

The Planned Surgery Management Team coordinates and case manages patients on the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne planned surgery waiting list. The team works in accordance with the Planned Surgery waiting list policy and Department of Health requirements to support timely and equitable access to surgery. Working across surgical specialties at SVHM, the team plays an important role in coordinating patient care, managing waiting lists and supporting patients throughout their planned surgery journey.
