Why Your Role Matters:
The Post-Doctoral Fellow plays a critical role in supporting research activities across a portfolio of projects focused on the Quality Use of Medicines (QUM). Working closely with the project team, the role contributes to the design, implementation and evaluation of qualitative and quantitative research, supporting the generation of evidence to inform policy, practice, and improved medicines use.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, assist in coordinating research activities and contribute to knowledge translation efforts that enhance the impact and sustainability of the QUM program. This position is embedded within a nationally recognised research team focused on improving the safety and quality use of medicines, with collaboration across UNSW’s National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, School of Clinical Medicine and School of Health Sciences.

The role reports to the program’s Chief Investigators and has no direct reports.

Responsibilities Summary:

• Conduct and coordinate research activities to the highest scientific and ethical standards.
• Contribute to the conceptual development of research questions and study designs under the guidance of a research leader, aligning with the program’s strategic goals.
• Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to identify current evidence, methodological approaches and knowledge gaps relevant to the Quality Use of Medicines, and use findings to inform study design, analysis and interpretation.
• Undertake data collection, data management and data analysis, including application of advanced statistical techniques.
• Prepare scientific papers, reports and conference abstracts, and present research findings at meetings, workshops and conferences.
• Contribute to stakeholder engagement and support knowledge translation by collaborating with research partners, participating in dissemination activities and promoting the application of research findings to relevant audiences.
• Assist in the preparation of research grant proposals and tenders for commissioned research.
• Independently plan workload and manage timelines to meet project milestones, and assist with HDR student supervision where required.

Skills and Experience Summary:

• A PhD degree in pharmacy, medicine, nursing, public health, or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct comprehensive literature reviews to identify current evidence, methodological approaches and knowledge gaps, and to synthesise findings to inform study design, analysis and interpretation.
• Demonstrated experience in designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative research studies.
• Proven ability to manage and analyse qualitative and/or quantitative data, using statistical software such as NVivo, SPSS, SAS or Stata.
• Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to prepare peer-reviewed publications, policy briefs and plain-language summaries for diverse audiences.
• Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and engage with stakeholders such as clinicians, policymakers and consumer groups.
• Strong understanding of ethical principles, data governance and privacy requirements in health research, with experience contributing to ethics applications.
• Experience in preparing research grant proposals and contributing to funding applications.
• Ability to independently manage workload, prioritise tasks and meet deadlines within project timelines and budget constraints.
