Overnight Supervisor

Wesley College Melbourne, a school of the Uniting Church, established in 1866, is one of Australia's leading and most respected co-educational independent schools.  With an enrolment of 3,400 students from ECLC to Year 12, it comprises three metropolitan campuses in Melbourne, at St Kilda Road, Glen Waverley and Elsternwick, outdoor education sites at Chum Creek, Mallana and Lochend, and Year 9 residential campus at Clunes.

Nature of the Role

The Overnight Supervisor will assume primary responsibility for the overnight supervision of the Wesley at Clunes campus for rostered nights during term time and participate as required in Week 0/9 Programs at Clunes.

Wesley Clunes is a residential learning community where students and staff live in a collaborative environment. The learning is holistic, focusing on the arts, social and emotional learning and sustainability.

Responsible to The Head of Wesley at Clunes, in the first instance, and to the Head of Programs and Staffing and Heads of Wellbeing.

Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities

• Rostered duties will include a hand-over with evening staff, assisting with settling the campus and assuming responsibility for the overnight care of students.
• Hours of work will be 8:00pm - 8:00am. During the hours between 10.30pm and 8:00am there will be the opportunity to sleep in private self-contained accommodation on campus.
• The Overnight Supervisor will be provided onsite accommodation for the nights on which they are rostered.
• To liaise with members of Clunes staff in the facilitation of communication with the teaching and non-teaching members of College/campus staff. Key relationships will include:
  • Head of Wesley at Clunes
  • Head of Programs and Staffing
  • Heads of Wellbeing
  • Clunes Nurses
• Provide support to students who are sick or in need of medical attention, specifically, distribution of medications, and providing bedside care in a Child Safe environment.
• To possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• To generate a friendly and warm manner towards the students
• Demonstrate full awareness of work health and safety issues and procedures, complying with these and taking responsibility for one's own health and safety.
• Demonstrate full awareness of Child Safe standards and procedures, especially as relevant to a residential school
• Take a leading role in promoting and supporting, students, staff and visitor safety and well-being and anticipating and responding accordingly to potential threats
• Be familiar with emergency procedures and be ready to implement them if necessary

Child Safety

Wesley College is committed to being a child safe environment, and we actively promote the safety and wellbeing of all students.  All College staff are committed to protecting students from abuse or harm in the school environment in accordance with their legal obligations, including child safe standards. The Wesley College Child Safety Program, including the Child Safe Policyand the Child Safe Code of Conduct is available via the Staff Intranet.  The following responsibilities are expected of all roles within the College;

All staff are expected to;

• Complete mandatory annual Child Safety training in accordance with directions from the College.
• Be familiar with the content of the College's Child Safety Program, including the Child Safe Policy and Child Safe Code of Conduct and with their legal obligations with respect to the reporting of child abuse.
• Be responsible for understanding and applying the College's child safety policies and procedures, including identifying and addressing risks, identifying child abuse indicators, management of disclosures, and internal and external reporting obligations.
• Be aware of key risk indicators of child abuse, to be observant, and to raise any concerns they may have relating to child abuse with one of the College's Child Safety Officers and/or with external agencies where required.
• Take all practicable measures to protect students where a risk to their safety has been identified, where students are under their care.
• Comply with the Child Safe Policy, and act in accordance with the Child Safe Code of Conduct.

Health and Safety

• Actively participate in and support a health and safety culture based on an ethos of prevention, consultation, collaboration, co-operation and mutual respect.
• Follow established health and safety policies, procedures, safe work practises, and instructions.

Report any hazardous condition, incident, injury, near miss and potential risk as soon as practicable.

Performance Indicators

• The Overnight Supervisor will be a dynamic and approachable person with an acute awareness of Child Safe standards and practice; someone who students can relate to and trust.
• Significant experience in a boarding or residential school context is preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, familiarity with computers, a self-starter and a high level of personal organisation will be important.
• The Overnight Supervisor will display initiative and the ability to work autonomously, be sound in their decision-making, reliable, relate well to adolescents, be flexible in nature, organised, efficient and able to deal with ever changing circumstances and the wellbeing and health needs of students at Clunes.

Position Requirements

• A current driver's licence and the ability to drive a manual vehicle is essential. 
• An understanding of the nature of learning and specific needs of adolescents.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate with a broad range of people
• Familiarity with computers and a high level of personal organisation.
• The ability to prioritise work in a demanding and ever-changing environment
• A current Working With Children Check and National Police Certificate are essential requirements of this role.
• A positive history of working with children, and experience in child-related work
• A strong belief in child safety and protection, and a willingness to be actively engaged in the College's child safe culture
