About the role
Queensland Foster and Kinship Care (QFKC) is seeking a skilled and compassionate counsellor to provide culturally safe, trauma-informed and healing-informed counselling support to foster and kinship carers through the Carer Assistance Program.
This role has a primary focus on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers and strengthening culturally responsive practice across the program. Applicants must demonstrate strong cultural capability, respectful engagement and an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing frameworks.
About the roleThe Counsellor – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Carer Wellbeing role will provide confidential counselling and therapeutic support to approved foster and kinship carers, including those who have been approved within the previous 12 months. The role will work alongside a multidisciplinary team to promote carer wellbeing, resilience and sustainability, while contributing to culturally safe and accessible service responses.
Key responsibilitiesProvide culturally safe, trauma-informed and healing-informed counselling to foster and kinship carers.
Apply Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing frameworks alongside appropriate counselling and therapeutic approaches.
Support carers experiencing grief, loss, trauma, caregiver stress, anxiety, depression, burnout or relationship challenges.
Develop and facilitate culturally responsive psychoeducational, therapeutic and social and emotional wellbeing group programs.
Build respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Elders, community-controlled organisations and other key stakeholders.
Contribute to quality improvement, reporting, case documentation and program development requirements.
You will bring a recognised qualification in psychology, social work, counselling or a related discipline, together with experience providing therapeutic support to people impacted by trauma, grief, loss, stress or complex life circumstances. You will also demonstrate strong cultural capability, ethical practice, reflective practice and a commitment to respectful, strengths-based work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers, families and communities.
Employment conditionsSCHADS Award Level 5.2.
Remote working arrangement.
Nine-day fortnight with reasonable additional hours covered by PDO.
Birthday leave and three gifted leave days during the Christmas period.
Current Blue Card required
